Gangtok, March 20, 2026: India’s ambitious railway project connecting Sikkim to the national rail network has achieved a major milestone, with a critical tunnel breakthrough completed on the Sevoke Rangpo line, bringing the long-awaited project closer to reality.
Engineering Milestone in the Himalayas
The Sevoke–Rangpo railway line, considered one of India’s most challenging infrastructure projects, involves extensive tunnelling through difficult Himalayan terrain.
The latest tunnel breakthrough marks significant progress in a project where over 85% of the route passes through tunnels, highlighting the complexity of construction.
First-Ever Rail Link for Sikkim
Once completed, this railway line will connect Sikkim to India’s railway network for the first time, ending the state’s long-standing dependence on road transport.
The project spans around 45 km between Sevoke in West Bengal and Rangpo in Sikkim, featuring:
14 tunnels
13 major bridges
Multiple stations along the route
Target Completion by 2027
Officials have set a December 2027 deadline for full completion and commissioning of the railway line.
Construction has progressed steadily despite geographical challenges, with most major structural work now in advanced stages.
Travel Time to Reduce Significantly
Once operational, the rail link is expected to:
Cut travel time between West Bengal and Sikkim drastically
Improve access to Gangtok and nearby regions
Provide faster and more reliable transport for passengers and goods
Boost for Tourism & Economy
The new railway connection is expected to transform travel in the region by:
Boosting tourism in Sikkim’s popular destinations
