In a major push towards sustainable public transport, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation has successfully transformed an old diesel-powered bus into a fully electric air-conditioned vehicle in Vijayawada. This marks a significant milestone in India’s growing shift towards eco-friendly mobility solutions.

The bus, originally introduced in 2017 and having clocked over 14.5 lakh kilometres, has been completely retrofitted with modern electric technology. The conversion involved removing the diesel engine, fuel system, and other mechanical components, replacing them with a high capacity battery system and electric drivetrain. Kalyani Powertrain Ltd carried out the retrofit as part of a proof of concept initiative, showcasing how existing fleets can be upgraded instead of replaced.

APSRTC Converts Diesel Bus into Electric AC Bus in Vijayawada

What Makes This Electric Bus Special?

  • Fully air-conditioned for improved passenger comfort
  • Driving range of around 210 – 230 km per charge
  • Charging time of about 2 hours (20% – 100%)
  • Built using a new AC bus body and advanced battery system

The bus will first undergo road trials in Vijayawada, followed by a 30 day commercial pilot run. If successful, APSRTC plans to deploy it on key routes like Nellore to Tirupati, where charging infrastructure is already available.

Why This Matters for Travelers

This retrofit project is not just a technical upgrade it signals a larger transformation in how people will travel across Andhra Pradesh. Electric buses mean:

  • Cleaner air and reduced pollution
  • Quieter and smoother journeys
  • Better onboard comfort for long-distance travel

APSRTC has already been actively expanding its electric fleet under national schemes, with hundreds of e-buses planned across cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati.

FlipMyTravel Insight

For travelers, this is a clear sign that future bus journeys in Andhra Pradesh will be greener, quieter, and more comfortable. As more diesel buses are converted or replaced, expect better travel experiences on popular routes, especially for intercity trips and pilgrimage circuits.

Final Take

APSRTC’s diesel to electric conversion is a smart, cost effective innovation that could redefine public transport in India. If the pilot succeeds, this model may be scaled across the state, making eco friendly travel not just a vision, but a reality.
